Exposure 1 vs. Exterior Plywood: Check the Rating Before You Buy

  3. Exposure 1 vs. Exterior Plywood: Check the Rating Before You Buy

When you buy plywood for a renovation, its moisture rating deserves a separate check from its thickness or face appearance. Exposure 1 and Exterior describe different intended conditions.

What Exposure 1 means

According to APA — The Engineered Wood Association, Exposure 1 panels can tolerate moisture associated with construction delays or similarly limited exposure. They are intended for uses without long-term exposure to weather. Plywood commonly called CDX in the trade should not be assumed to carry an Exterior classification.

What Exterior means

Exterior plywood has a bond classification suited to repeated wetting and drying or long-term weather exposure. The American Wood Council likewise distinguishes Exterior plywood from Exposure 1 panels, which are intended for uses without permanent weather exposure.

The classification concerns the adhesive bond. It does not by itself establish resistance to fungal decay. Exterior does not remove the need for suitable detailing, protection and maintenance.

Keep the other checks separate

A weather classification does not tell you everything about a panel's suitability. Also check the specified panel grade, thickness, span rating and intended application. Ask the supplier to identify the actual panel marking rather than relying on a shelf description.

A short buying checklist

  • Describe where the panel will be used and whether it will stay exposed.
  • Bring the project specification or approved plan when purchasing structural materials.
  • Read the classification on the panel and confirm uncertain markings with the supplier.
  • Ask about installation, storage and finishing requirements for that exact product.

If a substitution is proposed for a structural assembly, have the responsible designer confirm it before purchase. Similar-looking sheets can serve different purposes.
